At a time of great tragedy like the loss of the West Virginia miners, it gives all of us a chance to reflect.

While only one of the trapped miners survived the accident, great credit should be given to the rescuers who went down deep into the earth risking their lives in an attempt to save others.

Too much of the time our attention goes to the pop culture icons in our society when many of the real heroes are quiet, unsung, blue-collar workers who go the extra mile to make our lives safer and better.

I grew up with them, I understand them, and I respect them.
