Navy Jet Crashes Off Key West, Pilot Rescued

Friday, October 14, 2005

KEY WEST, Fla.  —  A Navy jet crashed Friday off the Florida Keys (search) and its pilot was rescued in the water after ejecting from the plane, the Coast Guard said.

The FA-18 went down 36 miles southwest of Key West around 9 a.m., said Coast Guard (search) spokeswoman Gretchen Eddy. The only pilot aboard was found alive a short time later and was hoisted out of the water by a Navy helicopter.

It was not immediately clear where the FA-18 (search) was based, its mission or what caused the crash.

The pilot was being taken to a hospital.
