Dozen Dogs Found Dead in Schools

Saturday, October 01, 2005

NEW ORLEANS —  More than a dozen dead dogs — many of them shot to death — were found in two schools in St. Bernard Parish (search), officials said Friday.

Parish spokesman Steve Cannizaro (search) said officers found about 10 dogs shot at a building most recently used as a middle school, and another four dead dogs at an elementary school. The incidents were reported Thursday.

Authorities are investigating whether the dogs were euthanized by owners or shot by military personnel, who may have killed the dogs if they became vicious when approached.

"They are looking into it," Cannizaro said. "They do not know who did this at this time."

Some of the dogs were found with their heads covered, and all of the bodies were badly decomposed.
