E-mail Was Doctored?

Friday, August 19, 2005

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Cindy Sheehan (search) has been attacked not only as unpatriotic but anti-Semitic, after an e-mail she sent to ABC News (search) was posted online. It included this statement: "... my first-born ... was killed for lies and for a ... neo-con agenda to benefit Israel." But Sheehan now says she never wrote that, insisting her e-mail was "doctored" by a "former friend who is anti-Israel and wants to use the spotlight on me to push his anti-Semitism." In fact, the man who sent Sheehan's letter to ABC, James Morris, has posted his own messages on-line, condemning the war in Iraq as "all about Israel." But Morris says Cindy Sheehan's letter was "in no way doctored."

Rating Itself Not ‘Well Qualified’?

The Senate Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, Patrick Leahy (search) of Vermont, says the American Bar Association's "well-qualified" rating for Supreme Court nominee John Roberts is unreliable because the ABA didn't have the time to review all the documents from Roberts' service in Republican administrations. But in 2001, Leahy had a different view of ABA ratings. In a letter then to President Bush, the senator called ABA evaluations "the gold standard by which judicial candidates are judged."

Marine Must Pay Out-Of-State Tuition

Austin Community College (search) in Texas has denied the request of a decorated Marine to pay in-state tuition, even though he's from Texas, has a Texas driver's license, and is registered to vote in Texas. Carl Basham will now have to pay $2,600 a semester, instead of $500, because he's been living out of state for the past few years. So where has he been? You guessed it: Iraq, serving two tours of duty.

Hoping a House Gets Bugged?

And officials in central Florida have come up with a new way to battle terrorism: Pest control workers. The Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Office are training technicians from local pest control companies to spot anything suspicious as they walk through people's homes. A spokesman for Truly Nolen Pest Control tells WKMG-TV, "Our vehicles really get into the bowels of the neighborhoods... [and] part of being a good neighbor is looking out for one another."
