Some of the deadliest plane crashes in the past 10 years:

— Aug. 23, 2005: TANS Peru Flight 204, a Boeing 737-200 with 100 people on board, split in two after an emergency landing during a fierce storm in Pucallpa, Peru, killing at least 41 people.

— Aug. 16, 2005: McDonnell Douglas MD-82 crashed in Venezuela, killing 160, while bringing passengers home to Martinique after a weeklong trip to Panama.

— Aug. 14, 2005: A Helios Airways flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Athens crashed into hillside outside Athens, killing 121 people.

— Feb. 3, 2005: An Afghan Kam Air plane crashed in the mountains due to bad weather, killing 104, including six from the United States.

— Aug. 24, 2004: Two Russian planes departing from Moscow's airport crashed within minutes of each other, killing at least 89 people in a terror attack. Explosives were found on both flights.

— Jan. 3, 2004: An Egyptian charter plane belonging to Flash Airlines crashes into the Red Sea, killing at least 148 people.

— Sept. 2, 1998: Swissair Flight 111 from New York to Geneva crashes off Nova Scotia; killing 229 people.

— Feb. 16, 1998: China Airlines flight crashes near Taipei airport while trying to land, killing 196 people.

— Aug. 5, 1997: Korean Air plane crashes near Guam Island, killing 228 people.

— Nov. 12, 1996: Saudi plane collided shortly after takeoff with a Kazak Ilyushin-76 making its landing approach near New Delhi, India, killing 349 people.

— July 17, 1996: TWA Flight 800, flying from New York to Paris, explodes and crashes off Long Island shortly after takeoff, killing 230 people.
