TOLEDO, Ill.  —  A man is accused of sending an e-mail bomb threat to the headquarters of an Islamic civil rights group, the Department of Justice (search) said.

Max Oakley (search), of Toledo, allegedly sent an e-mail on July 29 threatening to blow up the Washington, D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (search) unless it agreed to close down.

Police searched CAIR's building but did not find any evidence of explosives, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Wainstein said. CAIR officials then contacted the FBI and Washington police, who were able to trace the e-mail back to Oakley. He was arrested Friday.

"The guy wasn't exactly a rocket scientist. He sent the e-mail with his name clearly indicated in the address," CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.

Wainstein said Oakley admitted sending the e-mail threat. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

A woman who answered the telephone Friday at Oakley's home declined to comment. The town is about 80 miles southeast of Decatur.

CAIR, which also seeks to enhance the understanding of Islam, has 31 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada.
