Witnesses: Israel Launching Airstrikes

Friday, July 15, 2005

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip  —  Israeli aircraft launched a series of airstrikes in Gaza City (search) and the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis (search) early Saturday, witnesses said. Two people were lightly injured in the attacks, hospital officials said.

Palestinian security forces said the first missile launched in Gaza City landed outside a metal workshop, but did not appear to have exploded. No injuries were reported.

Minutes later another airstrike hit near a garage and a United Nations (search) food warehouse near the Shati refugee camp in the city. A man and a girl were slightly wounded in the explosion, hospital officials said.

In Khan Younis, a drone plane launched a missile at a group of militants armed with mortars and homemade rockets. None of the militants were injured, but an electricity transformer supplying power to the east side of the town was damaged, they said.

Minutes later helicopters fired missiles at a metal workshop and a garage in the town, causing some damage, but no injuries, witnesses said.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment.
