News and Documentary Emmy Nods Announced

Both ABC and PBS garnered 27 News and Documentary Emmy nominations (search) each on Thursday — the most of any news and broadcast outlets.

ABC's "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" (search) received seven nominations, the most of any evening newscast, for its coverage last year of the war in Iraq, the crisis in Beslan and the genocide in Darfur (among other stories).

Jennings, who's been off the air since early April battling lung cancer, also received nominations for his "Peter Jennings Reporting" pieces "LAPD" and "From the Tobacco File — The Tobacco Wars in America." (search)

NBC, which snared 21 nominations, was led by "Dateline," whose 11 nominations were more than any other network newsmagazine.

History Channel received 14 nominations, followed by CBS (10), MSNBC (seven), HBO (five), CNN (four), Discovery Channel and Sundance Channel (two apiece), Discovery Health (one) and FOX (one).

The awards will be presented Sept. 19 at the Marriott Marquis.

HBO's Sheila Nevins will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Television Academy, which bestows the Emmys.
