Clinton: Clean Up Gitmo

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

LONDON —  Former President Clinton (search) said the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay should close or improve its record on prisoner abuse, a British newspaper reported Monday.

Clinton told the Financial Times the camp should "be closed down or cleaned up."

"It is time that there are no more stories coming out of there about people being abused," Clinton told the newspaper.

Clinton spokesmanJim Kennedy (search) said the quotes were accurate.

Former President Jimmy Carter (search), as well as human rights groups and attorneys, have also called for the camp to be closed down.

About 520 prisoners with suspected links to Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime or the Al Qaeda terror network are being held at the camp in eastern Cuba.

Many have been held for more than three years without charge.
