U.S. Marine Killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq —  A U.S. Marine (search) was killed when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle in northwestern Iraq, the military said Sunday.

The bomb detonated Saturday near Haqlaniyah, 85 miles northwest of Baghdad (search), the Marines said in a statement.

The slain Marine was assigned to the 2nd Force Service Support Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force. His name was withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

As of Sunday, at least 1,656 U.S. military members have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003, according to an AP count.
