Blasts Near Iraq National Assembly Meeting

BAGHDAD, Iraq  —  Plumes of black smoke rose after a series of explosions detonated near a building where Iraq's new National Assembly (search) was about to convene on Wednesday.

Air raid sirens could be heard after more than half a dozen blasts echoed through central Baghdad (search). The assembly area was not evacuated and did not appear to have been struck.
