Israel Reopens Gaza Crossing

KARNI CROSSING, Gaza Strip  —  Israel (search) on Monday opened the key cargo crossing into the Gaza Strip (search) after several weeks of closure, the latest in a serious of confidence-building measures.

The Karni crossing, Gaza's lifeline, was closed Jan. 13 after Palestinian militants attacked Israeli workers there, killing six.

Since then, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (search) has obtained a promise from militants to halt attacks on Israel and there has been a sharp drop in violence. Also, Palestinian security forces have deployed in the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, hundreds of trucks lined up on the Gaza side of Karni, waiting to cross into Israel.
