Officers Injured Protecting Super Bowl

Saturday, February 05, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  —  Two police officers patrolling the St. Johns River (search) to prevent Super Bowl terrorism were seriously injured when their boat crashed into a bridge support.

The officers remained hospitalized Friday. They were identified as James Brunet, 41, who was listed in critical condition with non-life threatening injuries, and Keith Nazworth, 39, who was in fair condition.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (search) is investigating the accident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. It is conducting follow-up interviews with possible witnesses and reconstructing the event leading up to the crash.

"Our investigators are now checking out the accident scene in the daylight hours, assessing damage to the boat and the pilings. It will take some time to make the determination of actual cause," said Maj. Calvin Adams, regional commander for the FWC's North Central Region.
