Report: Nobody Wants Miss America Pageant

Monday, January 03, 2005

Bitter in-fighting between the Miss America pageant (search) and ABC was behind the announcement last fall that the lacklustre beauty contest was searching for a new TV home.

But it now appears that none of the six broadcast networks wants it, according to a report in the new issue of Broadcasting & Cable (search), a trade magazine.

NBC, Fox, ABC, the WB and UPN each "stated categorically that it will not buy 'Miss America,'" the magazine reported. CBS declined to comment, it said.

The magazine said pagaent officials decided to end its long relationship with ABC after the network cut the show to two hours, tried to kill the talent contest and failed to promote the event.

ABC paid $5.6 million for the rights to the show, the magazine said.
