The Foxlight: New on DVD

Tuesday, December 14, 2004

NEW YORK —  "Love Actually," "Lost in Translation," "Mary Poppins" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" are new on DVD in today's Foxlight.

One of my favorite films from last year gets a special DVD and video edition release just in time for the holidays. It's "Love Actually," (search) the perfect romantic comedy to open before Christmas. It's schmaltzy, yes. And Hugh Grant does an obligatory Motown dance scene. But this one will get to you, I promise. Especially Emma Thompson's gut-wrenching turn as the wife who knows her husband is cheating on her. Hey, there's also funny stuff. Don't miss this holiday treat.

Next, forget "Life Aquatic." Bill Murray takes us to Tokyo with Scarlett Johannson in "Lost in Translation," (search) the midlife crisis that happens at the speed of life. The rhythm and general vibe of this Oscar-nominated performance is outstanding.

Julie Andrews sets the way-back machine and shows us why "Mary Poppins" (search) is one of the most beloved films of all time.

Finally, all I really have to say for fans is "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." (search) And in the time it just took me to say the title, it's probably sold out wherever you go looking for it.
