The Foxlight: New on DVD

Wednesday, November 03, 2004

NEW YORK —  "The Clearing," "Around the World in 80 Days," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "At Home at the End of the World" are new on DVD in today's Foxlight.

Robert Redford puts on his best face but can't keep audiences interested in his latest movie "The Clearing." (search) Critics averaged a "B-minus," and Internet voters gave it a "C-plus." The story of a kidnapped business man held at bay by the always wacky Willem Dafoe seems like a bright idea, and new on DVD this week it may look a little more interesting. Bu in its initial run it only cleared theaters.

"Around the World in 80 Days" (search) should be at video stores for about 80 minutes. Then it's straight to the bargain bin.

Best new movie of the week? Johnny Depp's Oscar nominated "rrrrrrrrrrrr" rated film, "Pirates of the Caribbean" (search). It's actually all PG fun, with Depp charging around in campy costumes, and it did so well the first time around there's a sequel setting sail soon. This one caught me by such a surprise that last year it landed on the Foxlight Top Ten.

Finally, Colin Farrell distracted preview audiences so "dramatically" with his full-frontal nude scene that it got circumcised from the indie film "At Home at the End of the World." (search) That's OK because what he did show us was an interesting turn that viewers gave a "B." Not for bawdy or for bad. See it and wonder what you missed -- it's worth a rental.
