DOVER, N.H. — John Kerry (search) is making a campaign promise to rural America.
The Massachusetts senator says — if elected — he intends to hold a rural summit in Ames, Iowa, in the first 100 days of his presidency.
Kerry says he'll invite "the best and brightest minds in the country" to lay out a "very specific plan of action." He says that plan will be designed to reinvigorate rural economies and protect the health and welfare of those communites.
Kerry says many people cannot stay where they were raised or remain connected to their community values because there are no jobs and they're forced to go elsewhere.
The presidential challenger says helping communities includes making high-speed Internet access available throughout the nation.
Kerry's announcement came during a conference call from Dover, New Hampshire, where he is campaigning.
