Families Flock to Candidates' Sides

Wednesday, October 06, 2004

CLEVELAND —  The vice presidential debate stage quickly filled with family members at the close of the contenders' face-to-face meeting.

Relatives of Vice President Dick Cheney (search) and Sen. John Edwards (search) embraced the candidates after their first and only debate of the presidential contest.

Cheney's wife, Lynne and their daughters, Liz and Mary, joined him onstage, along with Liz's young children and Mary's partner. Both Cheney and Edwards referred to Mary, a lesbian, during a discussion about a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Edwards scooped up his two young children, Jack and Emma Claire, while his wife Elizabeth and their oldest daughter, Cate, stood beside him.
