WASHINGTON  —  New CIA Director Porter Goss (search) has replaced the agency's No. 3 official and made several other changes as he closes his first week on the job.

Goss announced Thursday that Michael Kostiw will replace A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard (search) as the agency's executive director. Kostiw, a former vice president at ChevronTexaco, previously served in the CIA for roughly a decade and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1986.

Krongard, known for an oversized personality, was a senior adviser to the agency's former director George Tenet (search). A wealthy martial arts expert, Krongard took the job after a successful career in investment banking.

"Buzzy brought energy, dedication, and a wealth of new ideas to agency during his six and a half years here," Goss said in a statement. "I know he will be remembered as a patriot who answered his country's call to serve during a time of great change and challenge for the intelligence community."

A former Republican congressman from Florida, Goss has also tapped three former aides from the House Intelligence Committee to join him at the CIA's Langley, Va., headquarters. Goss chaired the panel for almost eight years, stepping down when he was nominated by President Bush in August.

A U.S. official said the committee's staff director, Patrick Murray, will become chief of staff to Goss. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Merrell Moorhead and Jay Jakub will also become senior advisers to Goss. Their positions are new to the agency.

Goss, 65, was sworn in Sept. 24.
