U.S. Jet Crashes in Australia

Tuesday, September 14, 2004

DARWIN, Australia —  A U.S. fighter jet crashed in northern Australia on Tuesday, apparently after the pilot ejected, the Australian military said.

The F/A-18 Hornet (search) went down about 10 miles from Tindal airbase (search) in the Northern Territory, the Defense Force said.

Defense spokesman Michael Weaver said an Australian helicopter brought the American pilot to the base for treatment of his injuries. He was in stable condition.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

U.S. air force pilots often use Tindal for training.
