Explosion Rocks Baghdad Shopping District

Sunday, June 20, 2004

BAGHDAD, Iraq —  A mortar round exploded near Iraq's central bank on Sunday, injuring 10 people in the capital, including six policemen, a senior police officer said.

The blast occurred during rush hour in a shopping district in central Baghdad. Parts of the area were sealed off to ordinary traffic because of security precautions.

The shell landed about 300 yards from the bank but did not damage it, said Brig. Ali al-Mousawi, who is responsible for security at the bank.

Al-Mousawi said 10 people were wounded in the blast. Five injured were taken to Kindi Hospital (search), and official there said speaking on condition of anonymity.

Four cars were damaged.
