TORONTO —  Canadian police said Friday that a 24-year-old Ottawa man arrested on terror charges earlier this week has connections to the arrest of eight men in Britain.

Mohammad Momin Khawaja (search), a Canadian-born citizen who was taken in custody Monday, is accused of being involved in terrorist-related activity since Nov. 10, 2003 in Ottawa and "at or near the City of London, England," police said in a statement posted on its Web site.

He made a brief court appearance Friday via video to set a bail date next Wednesday.

Khawaja's attorney, Steven Greenberg, said he had seen nothing in the evidence to support the charges and said he will ask for a full disclosure of the evidence when Khawaja appears in court.

In the statement, police said Khawaja's arrests was connected to the arrests made in Britain Tuesday, when hundreds of British police made a series of raids in and around London. Eight men were arrested and police seized a half a ton of ammonium nitrate (search), a fertilizer compound used in the Bali and Oklahoma City bombing (search).

Officials on Friday declined to provide further details on the alleged connection.

Khawaja was the first person to be charged under Canada's Anti-Terrorism Act (search), which came into effect Dec. 24, 2001.
