The following are key attacks in Spain blamed on the Basque (search) separatist group ETA (search).

—March 11, 2004: Bombings kill at least 190 people and wound more than 1,200 in Madrid.

—July 13, 1997: Miguel Angel Blanco, councilman in the Basque town of Ermua, dies in a hospital after being shot by his ETA kidnappers.

—Feb. 14, 1996: Francisco Tomas y Valiente, former president of Spain's Constitutional Court, shot and killed at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

—Dec. 11, 1995: Six civilian workers traveling in a military van are killed by a car bomb in a Madrid suburb.

—April 19, 1995: Jose Maria Aznar, then the opposition leader and now prime minister, survives a car bomb attack in Madrid.

—June 21, 1993: Six military personnel and one Defense Ministry worker killed by a car bomb in Madrid.

—Feb. 2, 1992: Three soldiers and two workers killed by a car bomb in Madrid.

—Dec. 11, 1991: Ten people, including four children, killed in a car bomb attack on civil guard barracks in Vic, northeastern Spain.

—Dec. 11, 1987: Eleven people, including five children, killed by a car bomb attack on civil guard barracks in Zaragoza, northeastern Spain.

—June 19, 1987: Twenty-one civilians killed in car bombing at a supermarket parking lot in Barcelona.

—July 14. 1986: Twelve civil guard police officers killed by a car bombing in Madrid.

—April 25, 1986: Five civil guard officers killed by a car bombing in Madrid.

—Sept. 13, 1974: Twelve people killed by bomb attack on Madrid cafe.

—Dec. 20, 1973: Luis Carrero Blanco, the prime minister appointed toward the end of Gen. Francisco Franco's dictatorship, killed by car bomb in Madrid.
