Explosions, Gunfire Heard in Baghdad

Tuesday, March 09, 2004

BAGHDAD, Iraq  —  Scattered explosions and small arms fire were heard Wednesday morning in central Baghdad (search), while a mortar round fired by U.S. soldiers in northern Iraq missed its target earlier this week, killing an Iraqi civilian, the military said.

A U.S. military spokesman could not confirm the cause of the blasts in Baghdad but said they may have been controlled bursts to destroy captured stockpiles of ammunition and ordnance.

The 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (searchfired the mortar round as part of a strike against hostile forces Monday when it fell short and hit a building on the southeast side of Ejba. One Iraqi civilian was killed and another was wounded, the military said Wednesday.

The strike is under investigation. The military sent medical personnel to help treat the wounded Iraqi, while U.S. officials met with the family and the community.
