Lighten Up!

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

It amazes me how humorless some people are. I'm reminded "how" humorless after defending Rush Limbaugh (search) and the very rich on my show.

I was discussing both issues with some friends, some of whom are very liberal and very angry. The two seem to go hand-in-hand: A lot of liberals really need to lighten up -- but that's another issue.

Anyway, what I call the "really" liberal guy bashes me for supporting someone who likes to wag his finger at others for bad behavior. Before he could finish, I reminded him that "he" never said boo when a certain president he loved "wagged" his finger too.

He argued, very different.

"How?" I asked.

"Bill Clinton never lectured anyone," he said.

I'm having fun now, so I joked, "It's OK when it's about sex, not OK when it's about drugs, prescription, or otherwise?"

He literally got up from the table and walked out.

In walks a fairly well-known broadcaster who tells me Rush is an abomination.

"And you are Saint Francis?" I asked.

He ignored me.

I went on. "Boy, you guys went full throttle with the Rush story... more than you did the Arnold and groping story. Slow news day, I guess."

The well-known broadcaster shoots back, "It's news."

I shoot back, "So it's not news when Democrats do this."

"No," he said. "Because most Democrats aren't hypocrites."

And besides, he adds, Rush always called himself "the almighty one."

I reminded him that certainly he knew Rush was joking.

"I think he was very serious," he said.

"I think you're nuts," I said. "But nuts in a good way. A funny kind of nuts," I added.

Not a smile. Just a glare and he walked out.

So I'm thinking to myself, "Is it my deodorant?"

Believe me, I have no problem with liberals. I have a very big problem with super-serious liberals. Actually super-serious anyone! People who I know damn well wouldn't read too many critical e-mails, or stand for too many big head and big ego jokes. No, they are too important, too big for that.

Here's what I say: Get over that. And while you're at it, get over yourselves. You're already a riot and you don't even know it.

But I'm just kidding, right?
