SC Advances Bill to Require Ultrasound Before Abortion
Thursday, March 22, 2007
COLUMBIA, S.C. Legislation that would require women to see ultrasound pictures before getting abortions is moving through the South Carolina legislature.
A final vote on a House version is expected today. Members voted 91-to-23 on Wednesday in favor of a bill that does not contain any exception for women who are the victims of rape or incest.
Opponents of abortion think a woman considering one might have a change of heart after seeing a picture of the fetus.
But opponents of the ultrasound bill call it emotional blackmail. They say it's designed to intimidate a woman who's already made an agonizing decision.
No date's been set for a vote in the South Carolina Senate, where a version does include an exception in cases of rape or incest.
