Matthias Bachinger of Germany upset 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 Tuesday at the Chennai Open.
Lu, seeded seventh, rallied but fell short in a baseline slugfest lasting a little more than two hours.
Fifth-seeded Benoit Paire of France advanced to the second round. Joining him were qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany, Roberto Bautista Augut of Spain and Prakash Amritraj and Somdev Devvarman, both of India.
No. 6-ranked Tomas Berdych and No. 9-ranked Janko Tipsarevic are among four players who received first-round byes and will play Wednesday.
