Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Svetlana Kuznetsova captured her first WTA title in four years after outlasting Kurumi Nara in a three-set thriller in Sunday's championship match of the Citi Open.
The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova staved off a break point chance late in the third set before breaking Nara in the final game to record a hard-earned 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision in two hours, 16 minutes.
Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, won her first tour event since claiming the Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego in August of 2010. The title was the 14th of the Russian's career.
The 29-year-old took the first set and was up 3-0 in the second before Nara rallied to win the next five games and eventually force a third set.
Kuznetsova collected $43,000 for the victory, with Nara earning $21,400 for her runner-up finish.
