Stosur sends Australia into Fed Cup semifinals

Hobart, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Samantha Stosur breezed past Russia's Victoria Kan Sunday to give Australia a berth in the semifinals of the Fed Cup.

Stosur's 6-2, 6-3 win over the world's 158th ranked player gave Australia an insurmountable 3-0 lead over Russia in their best-of-five quarterfinal Fed Cup tie. That moves the Aussies into the semifinals for the first time in 21 years.

Russia had been 3-0 all-time versus the seven-time champ Aussies, with the series dating back to 1998. Australia went 3-0 versus the former Soviet Union from 1978-83.

The Aussies will await the winner of the tie between Slovak Republic and Germany, which leads that best-of-five quarterfinal, 2-0. If Germany wins, Australia will host the semifinals, but if Slovakia rallies then the Aussies will hit the road for the next round, April 19-20.

There were four matches played in the quarterfinal. The singles match between Casey Dellacqua and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova was canceled. The doubles team of Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty beat the Russian duo of Kudermetova and Valeria Solovyeva, 6-1, 6-3.
