Eastbourne, England (Sports Network) - Russian Elena Vesnina claimed her second career WTA title with a victory over American Jamie Hampton in Saturday's final at the Aegon International.
Vesnina cruised past Hampton 6-2, 6-1 in windy conditions at Devonshire Park.
"It was really difficult to play today, honestly," Vesnina said. "At the beginning I was like, 'Oh my God, I just need to stay in the match, just try to play every single point. Don't think about wind and just fight.' It was not about the serve, it was not about good forehands or good backhands -- it was about fighting spirit. If you're able to handle this, if you're able to play under the pressure with this wind, you'll do well.
"You always want to show the best tennis in the final, but it doesn't matter, a win is a win."
The 26-year-old Vesnina improved to 2-6 in her career singles finals, with her other victory coming earlier this year in Hobart, Australia.
The 23-year-old Hampton appeared in her first-ever WTA final.
Vesnina took home $117,000 with the victory.
Wimbledon starts on Monday. Vesnina will face Andrea Hlavackova in the first round, while Hampton will take on fellow American Sloane Stephens.
