Monterrey, MX (Sports Network) - Timea Babos of Hungary captured her first career WTA singles title on Sunday by beating Alexandra Cadantu of Romania in the final of the $220,000 Monterrey Open.
The 18-year-old Babos defeated Cadantu 6-4, 6-4 in 81 minutes on the hardcourts at Sierra Madre Tennis Club.
The Hungarian fired five aces, compared to just one for Cadantu.
"I was actually surprised because it was my first final and I wasn't nervous or tight," Babos said. "I just tried to play my tennis and stay aggressive. I was also really trying to keep my serve all the time, and she didn't have a break point, which was really positive for me. Then as soon as I had a chance on her serve I played a good point or hit a winner when I really needed it."
Both players were appearing in their first career final. Before last week, Babos and Cadantu each had just one WTA main draw win.
With the win, Babos took home $37,000.
