Shanghai, China (Sports Network) - Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka and German Florian Mayer were both first-round winners Sunday at the $3.24 million Shanghai Masters.
The 13th-seeded Wawrinka dropped the opening set, but rallied to beat Argentina's Juan Monaco 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while the 15th-seeded Mayer handled Italian Fabio Fognini 6-0, 6-2 on the hardcourts at the beautiful Qizhong Tennis Center.
This week's top seeds are former runner-up Rafael Nadal and reigning champion Andy Murray, who upset all-time great Roger Federer in last year's marquee finale. Nadal lost to Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the 2009 Shanghai title tilt.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is not playing this week as he continues to recover from a back injury.
The 2011 Shanghai champion will earn a cool $620,000. This marks the eighth of nine ATP Masters tournaments this year.
