Crosby hit with puck, leaves game

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Penguins star center Sidney Crosby exited Saturday's game against the New York Islanders early in the first period after being struck in the face by a shot from teammate Brooks Orpik.

The incident occurred just 1:28 into the matchup, with Orpik's long drive from the left point deflecting off the stick of an Islanders' player and hitting Crosby in his mouth. The Penguins' captain did leave the ice under his own power, but the team announced during the first intermission that he will not return.

Crosby leads the NHL with 41 assists and 56 points this season, while his plus-26 rating is second only to teammate Chris Kunitz for tops in the league.

Pittsburgh entered Saturday's tilt atop the NHL with 54 points and is riding a 14-game winning streak.
