Lions to keep RB Best on sidelines

Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions will not allow running back Jahvid Best to return to action once he is eligible to come back from the physically unable to perform list this week.

"After today's consultation with medical experts, including representatives from our medical and training staffs, it has been determined that Jahvid will not be permitted to return to play at this time," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said in a Monday statement.

"Throughout this entire process we always have placed the highest priority on what is best for Jahvid from a health and safety standpoint. While today's decision is disappointing from a football perspective, we fully and entirely respect and support this recommendation.

"Jahvid will continue to work with our medical and training staffs with the hope that he ultimately will be cleared to return to the playing field."

The Lions placed Best on the PUP in late August, after concerns due to concussion problems which cut short his 2011 season. Once on the list, a player is not eligible to play for the first six weeks of the regular season. Sunday's win at Philadelphia was the final game Best was slated to miss due to his status.

A 2010 first-round draft pick of the Lions, Best has rushed for 945 yards and six touchdowns in 22 career games.
