NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Cleveland
(Friday, March 8th)
Final Score: Memphis 103, Cleveland 92
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Marc Gasol scored 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting and added eight rebounds and five assists to help the Memphis Grizzlies to a 103-92 decision over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena.
Mike Conley had 17 points, 11 assists and five steals for the Grizzlies, who have won three straight and 11 of their last 12 games overall. Jerryd Bayless also had 17, while Ed Davis contributed 12 points and nine boards in the victory.
"We made a stand in the third quarter," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "I thought Ed Davis came out and got every rebound and played really strong and got us off to a good start. Marc (Gasol) got hot. In the fourth quarter, Mike Conley and (Bayless) took over on the scoring. We just kept defending and rebounding. We were able to get a win."
Kyrie Irving, who was doubtful prior to the game because of an undisclosed illness, finished with a game-high 24 points. CJ Miles had 13 points and Tristan Thompson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have lost three of four.
Irving's tough driving lay-in with 5:37 remaining brought the Cavs within 88-84 and capped off a 15-8 run to make things interesting.
Bayless and Conley, however, answered with a trey and a layup, respectively, to create some distance and Cleveland never closed the gap to more than seven points the rest of the contest.
Trailing by three points at halftime, Memphis opened up the third quarter on a 14-2 surge as Ed Davis capped it off with a hook shot at the 7:35 mark. two Dion Waiters free throws brought the Cavs within 66-61, though the Grizzlies took an 80-69 advantage into the fourth.
Cleveland only made 5-of-17 field goals in the third and managed just 18 points.
Memphis led after one quarter 23-19, but the home team took a 51-48 lead at the break.
"Everyone knew the third quarter would be key for us, but talk is cheap," Thompson said. "You have to go out there with a sense of urgency and a sense of fight. We clearly didn't do that tonight."
