| NOTES: |
|
Although Kyle Busch or Kevin Harvick might be the men to beat this
week with their outstanding records at Bristol Motor Speedway, defending
champion Brad Keselowski will certainly have plenty to say when all is said and
done.
Keselowski, who has climbed to fifth on the points list, has been on a tear of
late, posting seven straight top-10 finishes, including a win in Kentucky. In
addition, Keselowski won earlier this season at BMS.
Last season, Keselowski took the lead from Martin Truex Jr. just after a
restart with 80 laps remaining. He then held off Truex at the finish by 0.95
seconds for his third win of that season and the fourth of his Sprint Cup
career. With three victories in 2012, his win total has reached seven. It was
the first time since 1975 that a Dodge captured this race.
The last seven Bristol races have had a margin of victory under one second.
With the seedings for the Chase nearing, as many as seven drivers can lock
themselves into a Chase berth. Several drivers are on the outside looking in,
as Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch and Paul Menard rank 11
through 15.
Danica Patrick will make her Sprint Cup debut at BMS this week and her fourth
start on the 2012 calendar. Earlier this year, Patrick placed 19th on the
Nationwide Series at Bristol.
Kyle Busch hit the trifecta in 2010 at Bristol Motor Speedway and once again
made history in NASCAR. Busch became the first driver in NASCAR to win all
three of its national touring series races in the same week.
After winning the Camping World Truck race earlier in the week and the
Nationwide event two days later, Busch put on a dominating performance in the
IRWIN Tools Night Race by leading 282 of 500 laps and holding off David
Reutimann at the finish by 0.68 seconds to sweep the week at the 0.533-mile,
high-banked Tennessee track.
Busch had attempted a three-race sweep in NASCAR on the same week four times
before. His victory was the third of the season and the 19th of his Sprint Cup
career. He also won a Cup race at Bristol for the fourth time.
Kyle Busch ended Carl Edwards' two-year reign at Bristol Motor Speedway, as he
raced to victory in 2009. Busch, who started 15th on the grid, led the final
68 laps for his 16th career Sprint Cup title. Pole sitter Mark Martin, who led
for a whopping 240 laps, finished 0.098 of a second behind. Busch's victory
total now stands at 24.
In 2008, Edwards repeated as champion, as he defeated Kyle Busch by just under
two seconds for his 13th career Sprint Cup title. Edwards started on the pole
and led three times for 84 laps, including the final 31. Busch dominated the
race leading for 415 consecutive laps, but Edwards nudged him from behind.
Busch got loose, allowing Edwards to move underneath him for the lead. At the
conclusion of the race, a frustrated Busch retaliated by intentionally bumping
Edwards on the cool-down lap. Edwards, however, got the best of the post-race
ruckus when he spun Busch around.
Darrell Waltrip has the most victories at Bristol with 12. Waltrip won seven-
straight there from August 1981 to April 1984. Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and
Kyle Busch lead all active drivers with five victories each at Bristol.
Cale Yarborough started on the pole and led all 500 laps to win the
Southeastern 500 at Bristol on March 25th, 1973. Yarborough was a five-time
winner of this race.
Back-to-back wins at this race are the norm in recent years, as Matt Kenseth
doubled in 2005-06, Edwards in 2007-08 and Busch in 2009-10. Other drivers to
have doubled at Bristol are Dale Earnhardt (1987-88), Darrell Waltrip
(1981-83), Cale Yarborough (1976-78), David Pearson (1968-69) and Fred
Lorenzen (1963-64). It should be noted that Waltrip and Yarborough
accomplished the three-peat when they won their races.
Groundbreaking for Bristol International Speedway, as Bristol Motor Speedway
was originally known, took place in 1960. The track was exactly a half-mile in
length. Bristol held its first NASCAR Sprint Cup race on July 30, 1961. In the
fall of 1969, the track was reshaped and re-measured to .533 miles with the
turns banked at 36 degrees. The first night race there was held in the fall of
1978. The first Sprint Cup race was won by Jack Smith (with relief from Johnny
Allen). The deepest in the field that a Bristol race winner has started was
38th, by Elliott Sadler in 2001. Of the 103 races at BMS, 22 have been won
from the pole and 52 from the top four positions on the grid. 82 of 103 races
have been won from a top-10 starting position.
The next Sprint Cup Series race is the September 2nd running of the AdvoCare
500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, as Jeff Gordon defends his title from a year
ago.
