| NOTES: |
|
Kevin Harvick gambled on fuel and tires last year when he opted to stay on
the track, while most of the leaders pitted for the final time during a late-
race caution. He passed Denny Hamlin with 11 laps remaining and then beat
Hamlin at the finish by 1.7 seconds for his third victory of the 2010 season
and the 14th of his Sprint Cup Series career. Harvick also won at Michigan
for the first time in his 20th Cup start here.
With the victory, Harvick recorded his first Cup win on a non-restrictor plate
track since November 2006 at Phoenix. He also gave RCR its first Cup win at
Michigan since Dale Earnhardt did it in 1990.
Although he started on the pole, Brian Vickers led only 12 laps, but it was
good enough to capture his second career title in 2009 at Michigan
International Speedway. Vickers reclaimed the lead for the third time with just
three laps remaining to defeat Jeff Gordon by 1.409 seconds. Jimmie Johnson,
who has had little luck at MIS, dominated the race, leading six times for 133
laps, but ran out of gas and placed 33rd. Vickers' win ended an 87-winless
streak, with his last triumph in October 2006 at Talladega.
With 18 laps remaining, Carl Edwards assumed control of the race in 2008, and
held on for a 0.947 of a second win over Kyle Busch for his 12th career Sprint
Cup title. Edwards, who started in the 27th position on the grid, led five
times for a race-high 84 laps. Pole sitter Brian Vickers finished seventh.
Edwards, who's victory total stands at 16, is winless since posting nine
titles in 2008.
After two days of rain delays, Kurt Busch won the 2007 race on a rare Tuesday
running at Michigan. Busch led a race-high 92 laps and then held off Martin
Truex Jr in a green-white-checkered finish to record his second Cup victory of
the season and the 17th of his career. With one win in 2011, Busch's now owns
23 Sprint Cup titles.
In 2006, Matt Kenseth took over the top spot on lap 169 of the scheduled 200-
lap event and held on to edge Jeff Gordon by less than a second for his 13th
career Sprint Cup title. Kenseth, who now totals 20 wins, led six times for a
race-high 87 laps, while Gordon led three times for 12 laps. Pole sitter Jeff
Burton failed to finish the race, as he retired after 17 laps due to engine
failure and placed 42nd.
Jeremy Mayfield recorded his fifth career Sprint Cup title in 2005, as he
edged Scott Riggs by 1.974 seconds. Mayfield took the lead for the first and
only time with just six laps remaining and held on for the win. Pole sitter
Joe Nemechek led for a total of 30 laps and finished eighth, while Kurt Busch,
who finished seventh, led five times for 65 laps.
Overall, the pole winner has gone on to win this race nine of 41 times. Bill
Elliott is the only driver to win this race three straight years (1985-87) and
is the last driver to repeat as champion. Over the years, Elliott amassed 29
top-10 finishes at Michigan. Harry Gant holds the record for winning this race
from the farthest back when he captured the 1992 event from the 24th spot.
David Pearson was a nine-time winner at this track, including five wins in
this race. In addition, Pearson was a 10-time pole winner at Michigan.
Michigan International Speedway sits on more than 1,400 acres in the Irish
Hills of Southeastern Michigan. Groundbreaking took place on Sept. 28, 1967.
The first Sprint Cup race at Michigan was held June 15, 1969. There have been
84 NASCAR Sprint Cup races in Michigan, with 65 won from the top-10 position.
Although Jimmie Johnson owns several top-10 finishes at Michigan, he has never
won at the track, sporting a dismal 0-for-19 mark. His best placing was third
in 2007.
College Football Hall of Famer Desmond Howard (Michigan) will serve as the
grand marshal.
The next Sprint Cup Series race is the August 27 IRWIN Tools Night Race at
Bristol Motor Speedway. Kyle Busch won last year's race there.
