Description: Padres right-hander James Shields didn't pitch great, but he and his team won in Chicago on Friday.
Insight: Shields allowed four runs, three earned on five hits in six innings versus the Cubs. He also struck out nine and walked two. Wil Myers bailed him out, though, as he hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Padres a, 5-4, lead. The San Diego bullpen shut the door from there. Shields is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts.

Description: Padres right-hander James Shields outpitched Giants ace Madison Bumgarner on Saturday.
Insight: If this was a postseason game like last October, surely this would not have happened, but Shields is about as consistent as they get in the regular season. He threw seven innings on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits, struck out seven and walked one. The Giants one run on Shields was a homer. Shields is poised for a big season in San Diego.

Description: Padres right-hander James Shields threw three perfect innings Thursday night with five strikeouts.
Insight: It looks like Shields is ready to start the season. His ERA and WHIP should drop in his new home park, pitcher-friendly Petco Park, and facing opposing pitchers should help too. He's an innings eater, going at least 200 innings for eight consecutive seasons.

2/12/2015 10:40:00 AM

Description: Royals starter James Shields will look to rebound from a poor Game 1 outing.
Insight: He lasted only three innings in Game 1, and will need to pitch like an ace if Kansas City wants to return home with a lead in the series. Shields will be opposed by Giants go-to guy Madison Bumgarner, so he will need to bring his A-game.
