Description: In an effort to revamp its bullpen, Boston brought in Brandon Lyon on Friday.
Insight: Boston's pen has been hit hard by injuries over the last week with Andrew Bailey going down with a shoulder injury and Andrew Miller out for the year with a foot issue. Lyon will start out with the Paw Sox but it shouldn't be long before he's promoted to the major leagues. He's just an extra arm and we wouldn't expect him to be of much use to fantasy owners.
7/20/2012 2:29:00 PM
Description: Blue Jays reliever Brandon Lyon should play the setup role for closer Casey Janssen. Lyon was 0-2 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in 37 appearances.
Insight: Lyon is not a threat to Janssen owners despite 78 career saves. Janssen's numbers are clearly better and he's the strikeout-type closer that managers want in the role.

Description: Astros P Brandon Lyon underwent surgery today in Pensacola, FL to repair the detachment of his right biceps tendon as well as a repair of his labrum.
Insight: His season has officially come to an end, which now puts Mark Melancon in the closer role in Houston. Lyon is scheduled to earn $5.5 million next season, so depending on how Melancon does the rest of the year will determine whether or not Lyon is back.

Description: Houston Astros reliever Brandon Lyon is planning to have surgery on his pitching shoulder next week and likely is out for the season. Lyon will be examined on Wednesday by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Florida. The procedure is scheduled for Thursday. The right-handed closer has tears in his rotator cuff and his labrum, plus a problem with the biceps tendon. He went on the disabled list last week, only a few days after returning from a monthlong DL stint. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Mark Melancon has been handling the closer duties for Houston so this news should not really affect Lyon's fantasy value.

Description: Brandon Lyon has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after suffering a partially rotator cuff tear in early May. SOURCE: SB Nation Houston
Insight: Lyon said he felt good, so we will just have to wait and see how it translates onto the field. He is expected to ease back into the closer role, so consider him when looking for saves.

Description: The Astros have sent struggling closer Brandon Lyon back to Houston to have his right shoulder examined for weakness. SOURCE:
Insight: Look for Mark Melancon or Jeff Fulchino to get save ops while Lyon is on the shelf.
5/4/2011 2:44:00 PM
Description: Astros closer Brandon Lyon did not retire a single batter, allowing 4 hits and a walk, to give up 3 runs to blow the game against the Reds.
Insight: Lyon has 3 blown saves in his last 5 appearances. The Astros bullpen is pretty limited but, if anyone would get a shot at saves, it could be Jeff Fuclhino.
4/7/2011 6:48:00 PM
Description: Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless ninth inning, notching his first save of the season
Insight: It wasn't a very clean inning, giving up some hits, but he got the job done. He's a lower tier fantasy closer at this point, but he will be getting the ball in the ninth.
4/1/2011 3:09:00 PM
Description: Astros closer Brandon Lyon allowed 6 hits in the 9th inning, recording just one out, to allow the Phillies to score 3 runs to win the game, 5-4.
Insight: Lyon was up in the zone so the Phillies were basically hitting the ball off a tee. If Lyon continues to struggle look for Wilton Lopez, who pitched a scoreless 8th, to get first crack at saves.
2/26/2011 10:00:00 PM
Description: The Astros' official website reported that Lyon followed a lighter off-season throwing schedule and reported to spring training late in hopes of avoiding the shoulder cyst issue that bothered him last spring.
Insight: Lyon said he's ahead of where he was at the same time last year. He's a veteran, so all that really matters is that Houston's closer is ready to go for opening day. Between his history and his team, he's not a high-level fantasy option anyway. (
9/30/2010 12:02:00 AM
Description: Lyon got his 20th save of the season on Wednesday night against the Reds.
Insight: Lyon is 20-for-22 in save chances with a 3.20 ERA this season. (
9/25/2010 12:05:00 AM
Description: Lyon got his 19th save of the season on Friday night against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Lyon is 19-for-21 in save opportunities with a 3.24 ERA on the season. (
9/20/2010 4:00:00 PM
Description: Lyon picked up his 18th save of the season on Sunday against the Reds.
Insight: Lyon also has a 3.28 ERA on the season. (
9/15/2010 7:39:00 PM
Description: Brandon Lyon gave up a ninth inning run today to blow a save.
Insight: Matt Lindstrom (his main competition for saves) came in the following inning and gave up two runs without getting a single out. Lyon's job should be safe.
9/15/2010 5:21:00 AM
Description: Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth inning to earn a save last night.
Insight: Matt Lindstrom picked up a save the previous game but that was because Lyon needed a day off. Lyon is still the team's closer for the rest of the season.
9/10/2010 11:02:00 AM
Description: Lyon picked up his 14th save of the season on Thursday night against the Dodgers.
Insight: Lyon is 12-for-12 in save opportunities since taking over as the Astros' primary closer, and he has a 3.04 ERA overall on the season. (
9/5/2010 6:07:00 PM
Description: Brandon Lyon threw a scoreless ninth inning today to earn his 13th save of the season.
Insight: Matt Lindstrom pitched the eighth inning. Lindstrom might start closing again at some point but Lyon has certainly done everything he needs to do to keep the job all month.
9/1/2010 5:04:00 PM
Description: Lyon picked up another save on Wednesday even though Matt Lindstrom has been activated from the DL. Don't expect Lyon to be the closer much longer. However, a few spot saves in September is possible.
8/29/2010 4:06:00 AM
Description: Two pieces of good news for Brandon Lyon owners last night. First, Matt Lindstrom suffered a setback in rehab and second, Lyon earned his ninth save of the year.
Insight: It is quite possible that Lyon will close for Houston for the rest of the season. He should be owned in all leagues.
8/24/2010 5:52:00 AM
Description: Brandon Lyon got his seventh save of the season last night with a scoreless ninth inning in Philadelphia.
Insight: Lyon is definitely an option for fantasy owners that are looking for cheap saves. He should close for a couple more weeks and maybe longer.
