Carp was designated for assignment last week. | Insight: Carp hit .286 with 12 homers, 46 RBIs and an .819 OPS in 64 games after the All-Star break in 2011 but just .213 with five homers in 59 games last season. He could end up winning the backup 1B job over Lyle Overbay since he can also play outfield.
