Description: Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has announced that 2013 will indeed be his final season in the major leagues.
Insight: Rivera was limited to just nine appearances last season after suffering a freak knee injury shagging fly balls at batting practice. Since converting to a full-time closer in 1997, Rivera has never posted an ERA higher than 3.15. Even at age 43, Rivera is still a top-five fantasy relief pitcher.

Insight: New York lost the 42-year-old Rivera to a torn right ACL on May 3. He officially informed the team of his intentions to return for 2013 at the beginning of November. There's never been any doubt that the future Hall of Famer would retain the closer role if he decided to come back, even if his fill-in Rafael Soriano didn't opt out of his contract.

Description: New York righthander Mariano Rivera threw 25 pitches off a mound on Friday, his first pitching work since tearing his ACL back in May.
Insight: With Rafael Soriano electing to become a free agent, the 42-year-old Rivera is expected to resume his role as the team's closer at the start of the 2013 season.

11/3/2012 3:48:00 PM
Description: According the the New York Post, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (knee) informed GM Brian Cashman that he will return for the 2013 season.
Insight: Rivera tore his ACL back in May and was expected to return for the 2013 season until a report revealed that he was having second thought about coming back. The Yankees will have to negotiate a new contract with the all-time saves leader, as he is currently a free agent, but we expect them to hammer something out.

10/25/2012 6:44:00 PM
Description: New York closer Mariano Rivera told Yankees general manager Brian Cashman that he's unsure if he'll return to the team next season.
Insight: Rivera missed most of the 2012 campaign with a torn ACL. If the 42-year-old does end up retiring he'll end his career as the most prolific closer in league history. His 608 saves are the most ever by a major league pitcher.

7/16/2012 7:07:00 PM
Description: Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera (knee) told ESPN Radio's Michael Kay that his goal is to return in September.
Insight: Rivera's rehab doctor said last week that the 42-year-old is ahead of schedule after having surgery to repair a partially torn ACL on June 12, but it would still be a major surprise if Rivera was able to pitch again this season.

7/10/2012 5:15:00 PM
Description: According to the New York Post, the doctor in charge of Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera's rehab from a torn ACL thinks the 42-year-old can pitch again this season, though New York GM Brian Cashman shot that down Tuesday.
Insight: Rivera had surgery on June 12 to repair the torn ACL he suffered in his right knee on May 3. The surgery was delayed due to a blood clot, which Dr. Keith Pyne says allowed the closer to do extensive work on his knee pre-surgery. Pyne also said Rivera didn't have a full tear, and that the 42-year-old is in the top 10 percent of athletes he has worked with in terms of athleticism, flexibility and determination.

5/9/2012 7:21:00 PM
Description: In a press conference today, Mariano Rivera revealed that in addition to his torn ACL, he is also suffering from a blood clot in his right calf.
Insight: The Yankees are hoping Rivera's use of blood thinners will get the blood clot to go away. Certainly the blood clot won't speed up the recovery process for Rivera but hopefully in a few days, it won't be an issue anymore. Rivera is already out for the duration of the 2012 season.

5/8/2012 7:27:00 PM
Description: Mariano Rivera experienced "complications" to his knee upon visiting a doctor on Monday.
Insight: New York doesn't seem to think these "complications" are anything too serious. The earliest we'll be seeing Rivera again will be some time early in 2013. David Robertson (0.00) should occupy Rivera's ninth inning role until then.

5/4/2012 4:46:00 PM
Description: Mariano Rivera has a torn ACL and torn meniscus in his right knee and is likely out for the season.
Insight: Sad news out of New York, as this might end the career of the greatest closer in MLB history. Rivera's ACL tear was diagnosed yesterday, but the Yankees just revealed that he also has a torn meniscus. David Robertson is a must-add, as he'll likely be the closer in Rivera's place, although you can also add Rafael Soriano, who had 45 saves for Tampa Bay in 2010.

5/3/2012 10:54:00 PM
Description: Mariano Rivera underwent an MRI on his right knee during New York's game against the Royals Thursday night. Rivera injured the knee while shagging balls in the outfield during pre-game warmups.
Insight: We'll keep you posted on Rivera's status. The Yankees are losing in the seventh inning right now, so it doesn't appear that Rivera would have been needed tonight anyway.

5/3/2012 8:08:00 PM
Description: Mariano Rivera was carted off the field after suffering a knee injury in batting practice before New York's game against the Royals on Thursday night.
Insight: Rivera was shagging fly balls in the outfield when he collided with the wall and fell to the ground near the warning track. Rivera seemed to be in good spirits while he was being carted off but Yankees fans still have to be holding their breath. It's pretty safe to say that Rivera won't be pitching in tonight's game. David Robertson (0.00 ERA) could get a chance at closer if Rivera ends up being sidelined for an extended period of time.

4/6/2012 7:03:00 PM
Description: Mariano Rivera had a miserable season debut Friday in Tampa Bay. The future Hall of Famer coughed up a 6-5 lead and ended up taking the loss as the Rays rallied to win 7-6 in the ninth inning.
Insight: Five pitches into the outing, Rivera had already blown the save after surrendering a triple to Ben Zobrist. After that it was damage control for the 42-year-old righthander. It was a poor outing for the star closer but Rivera should be fine going forward.

7/5/2011 9:32:00 AM
Description: Yankees CL Mariano Rivera said he has "a little soreness" in the lower triceps of his right arm, just above the elbow, but it's nothing to be concerned about.
Insight: He wasn't available to pitch in the Yankees' 6-3 loss to the Indians Monday night, but said he hopes to be able to pitch Tuesday. "I'm not concerned about it," Rivera said. "Not at all. [Just] little things that happen." Rivera's absence forced Girardi to keep starter A.J. Burnett on the hill a little longer than he wanted.

6/22/2011 7:05:00 PM
Description: Yankees closer Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless 9th inning against the Reds, striking out two, to pick up the save against Cincinnati.
Insight: Rivera has rebounded from his struggles in late May and should be considered an elite closer.
