Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon recorded another save in the, 7-6, victory over the Reds on Tuesday.
Insight: Melancon struck out the side in order to shut the door on the Reds. He now leads all of baseball with 24 saves. Melancon hasn't allowed an earned run since May 11. He has a 1.82 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings this season.
6/18/2015 11:21:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon recorded his 23rd save of the season on Thursday, which leads the National League.
Insight: Melancon also tied Glen Perkins, who leads the American League with 23 saves. Melancon has not allowed an earned run in his last 18 appearances to drop his ERA to 1.87. His last earned run allowed came on May 11.

Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon looked a bit shaky, but he nailed down his seventh save of the season as Pittsburgh beat St. Louis, 4-3, on Sunday.
Insight: Melancon allowed two hits in the first three batters as the tying run moved into scoring position, but he was able to strike out Jason Heyward and then induced a grounder from pinch hitter Pete Kozma. Melancon hasn't allowed a run in his last three innings, so his numbers, 3.77 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, look a little bit better after a rough first half of April.

Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon looks a bit more like himself as he picked up his fifth save of the season on Saturday versus the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Melancon's velocity is still down, but he has picked up three straight saves since his blown save on Tuesday. He did allow a hit and a walk in the ninth on Saturday, but a caught stealing help Melancon hold the one-run lead. The numbers still look bad, 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, but hopefully the worse is behind him.
4/23/2015 4:17:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon picked up a much needed save Thursday against the Cubs.
Insight: Melancon blew a save last time out, and still owns an ugly 7.36 ERA, but his 1-2-3 inning on Thursday may be just what he needed to get back on track.
4/21/2015 10:29:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon is off to a less than desirable start and blew a save on Tuesday versus the Cubs.
Insight: Melancon and Pittsburgh had a three-run lead in the ninth, but he allowed three hits and a walk before recording an out as the lead disappeared. Melancon forced a chopping ground ball twice, but the first time it bounced over third baseman Josh Harrison's head to score two runs and the second one was too slow to turn a double play, which let the game-winning run score. Melancon is 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA in seven appearances this season.
4/19/2015 4:22:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon picked up his second save of the season on Sunday.
Insight: He allowed on hit in the ninth, but escaped without giving up a run.
4/13/2015 4:38:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon struggled in a non-ave situation Monday versus Detroit.
Insight: He allowed three runs on four hits, but luckily Pittsburgh hung onto a 5-4 win. Melancon should be fine moving forward.
9/20/2014 10:43:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon has not been great in non save situations this season, since becoming closer.
Insight: He took the loss to the Brewers, giving a run in the ninth, dropping his record to 3-5. However, Melancon has been extremely reliable when Pittsburgh has the lead, with 31 saves a 1.96 ERA. He is an extremely dependable fantasy closer.
Hot9/18/2014 11:30:00 PM
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon notched his 30th save of the season.
Insight: Melancon has thrived since taking over for Jason Grilli in July of last season.
Hot6/20/2014 2:16:00 PM
Description: Fantasy owners should jump on the Mark Melancon (1-2, 1.89 ERA, 0.780 WHIP) bandwagon while Jason Grilli has been exiled from the closer's role.
Insight: Melancon thrived in the role last season after Grilli was sidelined by injury. He accumulated 16 saves in 2013.
5/23/2014 4:16:00 PM
Description: Fantasy owners who have ridden Mark Melancon while Jason Grilli has been sidelined will be disappointed to see that Grilli has been activated a day earlier than expected.
Insight: Melancon (0-0, 2.05 ERA, 0.955 WHIP) accumulated eight saves and a win in May while blowing just two games. He should return to his customary setup role with an occasional closing opportunity when Grilli has pitched too many days in a row.
Cold9/21/2013 9:19:00 AM
Description: Mark Melancon's worst stretch of the season couldn't have come at a worse time.
Insight: Pittsburgh's All-Star closer has blown two saves in a row with a 10.80 ERA in those two outings. Melancon's overall numbers are still excellent but the Pirates need more from him down the stretch. If Melancon (2-2, 1.30 ERA, 0.96 WHIP) continues to scuffle, the Pirates could go back to their original closer, fellow All-Star Jason Grilli.
7/14/2013 3:37:00 PM
Description: Pirates reliever Mark Melancon has been invited to Tuesday's All-Star Game at Citi Field.
Insight: He'll replace teammate Jeff Locke on the National League roster. Locke bowed out because of a back injury. It's hard to argue with Melancon's selection. The 28-year-old is 2-1 with a 0.81 ERA in 45 relief appearances this season. Melancon was traded to Pittsburgh this past offseason after a disastrous year in Boston in 2012 (0-2, 6.20 ERA).
12/26/2012 3:54:00 PM
Description: Reliever Mark Melancon has been dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Insight: He came over as part of the Joel Hanrahan trade. Melancon (0-2, 6.20 ERA last season) will have to settle for setting up Jason Grilli in 2013. Don't expect him to have any fantasy value unless Grilli (1-6, 2.91) gets injured.
6/10/2012 3:24:00 PM
Description: After a two-month stint in Triple-A, Mark Melancon has finally earned a promotion back up to the major leagues.
Insight: Melancon was dominant in 21.2 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket (0.83 ERA, .185 BAA) but he looked terrible in four appearances for the Red Sox at the start of the year (0-2, 49.50 ERA). If Melancon pitches like he did in Pawtucket, he could easily become Boston's new setup man. But that 49.50 ERA serves as a reminder that things could also go south in a hurry for Melancon if he's not careful.
4/8/2012 6:36:00 PM
Description: Mark Melancon had a disastrous outing Sunday against the Tigers. Melancon allowed three runs and three hits including an Alex Avila walkoff home run in the 11th inning. He lasted two thirds of an inning. It was Melancon's second loss of the season.
Insight: Boston has some serious closer problems right now. We're not sure how much more of this Bobby Valentine will be able to take before he considers moving Daniel Bard back to the bullpen.
4/8/2012 5:03:00 PM
Description: You might want to think about adding Mark Melancon after another subpar outing by Alfredo Aceves on Sunday.
Insight: Boston's closer situation is a mess right now. If Aceves keeps pitching like this, Bobby Valentine will have no choice but to move Melancon into the closer's role.
4/4/2012 3:11:00 PM
Description: Mark Melancon will remain the eighth inning option as Alfredo Aceves will close for Boston.
Insight: Melancon was thought to have the inside track for the job, considering his closing experience and Aceves' success as a bullpen swingman, but Aceves gets the job for now. Drop Melancon and grab Aceves if you still can.
4/3/2012 9:10:00 AM
Description: Mark Melancon could be thrust into the closer role in Boston, as the Boston Globe reports Andrew Bailey needs surgery on his injured thumb.
Insight: Melancon saved 20 games for the Astros last season, but closing games in Boston is an entirely different animal than finishing them in Houston. Still, if Melancon does assume the closer role in Bailey's absence, he's worth an add, as Boston will provide plenty of save opportunities for the 27-year-old.
