Description: Reds lefthander Sean Marshall (shoulder) has been taken off the disabled list.
Insight: He'll be active for Friday's contest against the Nationals. Once a starter, Marshall has been able to carve out a role for himself as a successful middle reliever since coming to Cincinnati.
5/19/2012 4:53:00 PM
Description: Sean Marshall was unable to pick up a save against the Yankees on Saturday. Marshall entered in the ninth inning of a 6-3 game but he gave up two runs on four hits and had to be removed by Reds manager Dusty Baker. Jose Arredondo was able to close the door for his first career save.
Insight: Baker has shown he won't hesitate to pull the plug on Marshall if he's struggling in the ninth inning. He yanked the lefty against the Brewers on May 9 after he gave up three hits in a 2-0 game. However, Baker brought Logan Ondrusek into that game, so he hasn't really tipped his hand on which pitcher he'll use if Marshall has to be removed from the closer role permanently. Marshall has picked up seven saves and 21 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings so his job shouldn't be in jeopardy yet despite his 5.02 ERA.
5/9/2012 4:17:00 PM
Description: With the Reds leading 2-0 in the ninth inning on Wednesday, Sean Marshall was unable to get the job done and had to be lifted by Reds manager Dusty Baker.
Insight: Logan Ondrusek ended up picking up the final out of the inning to earn the save after Marshall gave up a leadoff homer to Ryan Braun and then two singles. Ondrusek walked the first batter he faced to load the bases but retired pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa on one pitch to lock down the win.

4/3/2012 9:21:00 AM
Description: Dusty Baker announced Monday that Sean Marshall will open the season as the Reds' closer.
Insight: Good news if you added Marshall when Ryan Madson went down. Even though Dusty Baker toyed with the idea of using a closer-by-committee, he's now committed to Marshall as his stopper in the bullpen. If he can hold onto the role all season, he'll provide 30-plus saves with excellent ratios.
3/27/2012 1:29:00 AM
Description: While it was originally thought that Sean Marshall would close with Ryan Madson out for the year, Reds manager Dusty Baker said he is open to a closer-by-committee.
Insight: Ugh. The dreaded closer-by-committee never helps anyone. It doesn't work for the team who employs the strategy and it definitely doesn't help in fantasy. Sean Marshall is still the favorite to get the saves in Cincinnati, but we'll have to monitor Baker's tendencies in April.
