National League Game Summary - New York at San Diego
(Sunday, August 18th)
Final Score: San Diego 4, New York 3
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Will Venable continued his torrid stretch and staked the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 victory after clubbing the game-winning home run in the ninth inning against the New York Mets.
Venable, who had four hits in Saturday's victory and added two more on Sunday to stretch his hitting streak to 15 games, sent a 1-2 offering from Pedro Feliciano (0-2) deep into right and it stayed just inside the foul pole for his 17th home run of the season. He finished the game with two RBI.
"He's really playing the game hard and you get rewarded for playing the game hard," said Padres manager Bud Black about Venable. "He's swinging the bat great."
Chris Denorfia delivered a game-tying RBI in the eighth, while Alexi Amarista contributed a sacrifice fly to help the Padres earn a split of this four-game set. Huston Street (1-4) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.
Marlon Byrd ended 2-for-4 with an RBI and Wilmer Flores and Andrew Brown had an RBI apiece in the setback for New York.
Starter Matt Harvey pitched six innings of two-run ball and left in line for the win, but a lackluster performance from the bullpen forced him into a no decision.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the seventh and Omar Quintanilla standing at second base following his double, New York pinch hit for Harvey with Brown and the move paid off, with the righty clubbing a double off Padres starter Eric Stults into center to move the Mets in front.
The Padres left the bases loaded in the home eighth, but not before tying the score at 3-3. Chase Headley's double off Gonzalez Germen stayed just inside of the right field line and put runners at second and third, and Denorfia brought in the tying run with a slow rolling grounder toward short.
New York struck quickly in the opening inning. Justin Turner reached third base when he lofted a fly ball just past the diving stretch of Venable in center, and came in to score easily on Byrd's double into the left field gap.
Byrd helped the Mets get another run in the fourth. He led off with a single and hustled into third while Logan Forsythe bobbled a Josh Satin single in left. Flores lifted a fly to right and Byrd beat the throw home.
The Padres capitalized on Harvey's poor start to the fifth inning, in which he plunked leadoff man Forsythe and then served up a bloop single to Nick Hundley. Stults sacrificed the runners over and Venable brought a run in when he chopped an infield hit just out of Harvey's reach. Amarista knotted the score at 2-2 with sac fly to center.
"Obviously things weren't going quite my way that inning," said Harvey. "I made good pitches, they just put them in play and found some holes."
Harvey struck out six and is winless in his last five road starts ... Stults turned in 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks ... Hundley went 3-for-3 for San Diego ... Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud walked twice and remains hitless through his first two major league games.
