National League Game Summary - Miami at New York
(Wednesday, August 8th)
Final Score: Miami 13, New York 0
Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Jose Reyes accomplished plenty during his nine-year tenure with the New York Mets, though he arguably never had a better stretch than the one he's currently on in his first year with the Marlins.
Reyes extended his hitting streak to a career-high 26 games with a solo home run in his first at-bat Wednesday, while Giancarlo Stanton added a pair of two-run blasts in Miami's 13-0 drubbing of New York.
The 26-game streak, the longest in the majors this season, comes on the heels of Reyes batting .264 in the first half. Since the All-Star break, the four- time All-Star has hit .365 (38-of-104) with five home runs.
"I'm just trying to be me. I'm not thinking too much about [the streak], just trying to play my game," Reyes said.
Stanton went 4-for-5 one day after being activated from the 15-day disabled list. He followed Reyes' second-deck shot in the first inning with a two-run homer later in the frame, then made it 7-0 with a screaming line drive over the left-field wall in the fifth after Carlos Lee's two-run base hit.
Bryan Petersen added a three-run triple and scored on a Justin Ruggiano single in the eighth, and Greg Dobbs hit a two-run homer in the ninth to cap the rout.
New York starter Chris Young (3-6) was mercifully pulled after yielding seven runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
His counterpart, Nathan Eovaldi (3-7), survived four hits and six walks in five-plus scoreless frames to earn the victory. Ryan Webb and Chris Hatcher each hurled two innings of relief to complete to shutout.
New York lost the opener of this three-game series, 4-2, on Tuesday and has dropped nine straight at Citi Field -- the club's longest home skid since 2004.
"It's one of those games you just check off the calendar and get ready for tomorrow," Mets manager Terry Collins said.
Reyes is the first reigning batting champion with a streak of more than 25 games since Joe DiMaggio had his ML-record 56-game streak in 1941. His current hit streak is the third longest in Marlins history..Stanton has five career multi-home run games...Miami, which improved to 4-6 on its 11-game road trip, hit three long balls after not homering in its previous seven games...Lee has hit safely in 13 straight games...Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada went 1-for-3 to extend his career-high hitting streak to 13 games...The Mets turn to R.A. Dickey in Thursday's series finale, while the Marlins counter with Josh Johnson.
