Rays' Cobb named AL Player of the Week

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 22.

Cobb went 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA and 22 strikeouts in two starts to earn his first career weekly honor. The right-hander was first in the majors in innings pitched and tied for first in wins and strikeouts for the period.

The 25-year-old allowed two runs over eight innings to lead the AL Wild Card- leading Rays to a 6-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday, ensuring the club's sixth winning season. In his next start, Cobb struck out 12 batters while giving up only one run across 8 1/3 innings of work to defeat the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Others considered for the award included Kansas City's James Shields, Houston's Chris Carter, Minnesota's Brian Dozier, Detroit's Victor Martinez and the New York Yankees' Ivan Nova.
