Royals call up Ciriaco, Pena among slew of roster moves

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals selected the contracts of infielders Pedro Ciriaco and Carlos Pena from Triple-A Omaha prior to Tuesday's contest against the Seattle Mariners.

Ciriaco appeared in 51 combined games between Boston and San Diego this season and batted .228 with two home runs, eight RBI and eight stolen bases before being claimed off waivers by the Royals from the Padres on July 16.

Pena, meanwhile, had spent the better portion of the 2013 season with Houston, hitting .209 with eight homers and 25 RBI over 85 games before being released on July 31.

The 35-year-old former first-round pick signed with Kansas City -- his eighth different team over his 14-year career -- on Aug. 27.

Also Tuesday, the Royals recalled pitchers Wade Davis, Louis Coleman and Donnie Joseph and infielder Johnny Giavotella from Omaha.

Over 24 starts this season, Davis has compiled a 6-10 record with a 5.67 earned run average, while Coleman has pitched to a 2-0 record and a minuscule 0.39 ERA in 20 relief appearances with the Royals in 2013.

Joseph made his major league debut with Kansas City on July 11 and has yet to surrender a run in 3 1/3 innings of relief work over three games.

Giavotella has appeared in just 10 games for the Royals this season, batting .206 with two doubles and four RBI.
