Final Score: Chicago 6, Cleveland 2
Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu clubbed his major league- leading 29th homer of the season, a two-run shot that set the tone for the Chicago White Sox' 6-2 decision over the Cleveland Indians. Gordon Beckham added a two-run double and Scott Carroll tossed five scoreless innings before exiting with a back injury to help the White Sox halt a three-game losing streak. Prior to his departure, Carroll (4-5) held the Indians to a pair of singles and a walk in the 29-year-old rookie's second straight impressive start on the road. He yielded just one hit over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to best Boston in Fenway Park on Monday. Cleveland's Zach McAllister (3-5), making his first major league start since May 21, also pitched well despite being hung with the loss. The right-hander was reached for three runs on only four hits over seven solid frames. Michael Brantley had a solo homer for the Indians and Jason Kipnis went 1-for-3 with an RBI in defeat.
Final Score: New York 3, Baltimore 0
Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Shane Greene once again provided a huge lift to the New York Yankees' injury-plagued rotation, firing 7 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 3-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Five days after twirling six innings of two-run ball to defeat Cleveland in his first major league start, Greene (2-0) racked up nine strikeouts while limiting Baltimore's power-packed lineup to just four singles in a strong encore. The rookie got help from a few of New York's wily veterans, as Mark Teixeira and Jacoby Ellsbury came through with run-scoring doubles and Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. Brian McCann finished with three hits in the victory. Baltimore's bats, on the other hand, never got untracked. The Orioles mustered just five hits -- with Nick Markakis accounting for two of them -- and fanned 12 times in all in the loss, just the third in 12 games for the current AL East leaders.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 10, Toronto 3
St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Kiermaier had three hits and three RBI and Matt Joyce also knocked in three runs, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 10-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Jake Odorizzi (5-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Rays after he was moved up a day in the rotation to start in place of staff ace David Price, who the team says is battling an illness. Odorizzi struck out seven and was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on six hits and two walks. Dioner Navarro had two hits, including an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who won the opener of the three-game series 8-5 on Friday but have now lost seven of their last nine.
Final Score: Houston 3, Boston 2
Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter's RBI infield single in the eighth inning lifted the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Boston won the opener of the three-game series 8-3 on Friday behind catcher Christian Vazquez's first three major-league hits and first three RBI. David Ortiz hit a solo homer in this one but the Red Sox managed only one other run despite 13 hits and had their three-game winning streak snapped. Jason Castro had two hits, including a two-run homer for the Astros, who have won four of their last five since a seven-game losing streak.
Final Score: Minnesota 9, Colorado 3
Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Correia tossed six effective innings and the Minnesota Twins routed the Colorado Rockies, 9-3, in the middle test of a three-game set. Eduardo Escobar smacked a solo homer among his two hits and scored a pair of runs, while Oswaldo Arcia had a pair of hits and scored twice in the triumph. Charlie Blackmon went 5-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tyler Matzek (1-4) surrendered four runs on seven hits and a walk over six frames for Colorado, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
