Jeter to have surgery on ankle

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will undergo surgery to repair a broken left ankle.

The procedure will be performed this coming Saturday, in Charlotte, by Dr. Robert Anderson. Recovery is expected in approximately 4-to-5 months.

Jeter fractured his left ankle in the 12th inning of Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. The Yanks captain moved to his left to field a ground ball hit by Jhonny Peralta and fell to the ground as he gloved the ball.

Jeter went 1-for-5 in the game and became the first player to ever record 200 career hits in the postseason.

The news comes one day after New York fell behind 3-0 in the ALCS, with a potential series-ending Game 4 on tap at Comerica Park in Detroit later on Wednesday.
