The Viking Classic moved from the Fall Series into the middle of the season this year, but it will be contested opposite the British Open this week. The tournament was canceled in 2009 due to unplayable course conditions. The event returned last year and Bill Haas opened with three rounds in the 60s. Haas closed with an even-par 72, but it was more than enough for a three-stroke win over Michael Allen. Haas will not defend his title as he will be playing at the British Open. Dating back to 1996, just six of the event`s winners from that span will be in the field this week. Headlining that group is 2008 champ Will MacKenzie, who has split time between the PGA and Nationwide Tours this season. He shared fourth place at the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Nationwide Tour, but his next best finish is a tie for 30th, which came last week at the John Deere Classic. The field this week includes former major champions Rich Beem, Steve Elkington, Lee Janzen and Shaun Micheel. Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds this week. The PGA Tour moves to Canada next week for the Canadian Open. Carl Pettersson made the cut on the number last year, then closed with rounds of 60-67 to beat Dean Wilson by a single stroke.
